Local alternative rock band trio Lunarin is no stranger to big ideas or big dreams. Why would they
when two of the band members are full-time lawyers while the other is a
chemical engineer with a Masters degree?
It’s no wonder then that they went all out to Los Angeles
and produced their debut album, The
Chrysalis, at a whopping cost of S$12,000 (yikes, that would put a significant dent in just about anyone’s
wallet), bringing to life their ideas.
Linda Ong, lead vocalist and bassist of the band, explained,
“The album is about finding out who you truly are. The theory is that when we
are born, we’ve accumulated layers on our skin. These layers are other’s
preconceived ideas imposed on us about what is right and what is wrong. This
album is about shedding the layers away.”
But their big ideas do not stop there. Besides working on
their next album (on top of their hectic day jobs, mind you), they also have
big ideas on what their super powers should be.
And no, it has nothing to do with ‘saving the world’ – let’s
just say that after fulfilling some pretty hefty dreams, they just want their
super powers for their…well… amusement.
The VISION-ary
“I want to have X-Ray vision. I’m curious about people and
when I look at people, I like to think whether he does his own laundry and what
sort of underwear he wears,” said Linda coolly with a straight face behind her
thick brown sunglasses.
Makes you just want to cover up certain body parts, right?
An example of her personal interest in others’ extremely
personal lives? Well, when the judge was reprimanding her in court, she actually
tried ‘to imagine what he looks like when he just wakes up in the morning’.
Wouldn’t it be a riot if one of the judges were reading this
article at Youth.SG?
The Pilot
Dubbed ‘the heart of the
band’ by his bandmates, the guitarist Ho Kah Wye would love to just ‘fly around
the world’ in black leather. Probably a very expensive black leather may we
add, since he’s also the treasurer of the band.
Don’t be deceived by his quiet and reserved manner though.
Once strapped with a guitar, he’s louder and meaner than Simon Cowell stuck in
a K-Box lounge.
The Muscleman
Can you guess the drummer Loo Eng Teck’s dream super power?
“Definitely strength so I can carry every bloody thing that
I need. I almost died lugging around the stuff!” said the poor drummer
exasperatedly.
Well, with or without super powers, we are pretty sure we’ll
stay out of this guy’s wrath, especially since he’s able to carry “a cymbal
bag, laptop, two drum triggers in a bag, one drumstick bag and one small pouch”
all at once from the parking lot to the Esplanade.
If you haven’t listened to their songs (where have you
been?), check out Lunarin’s Silverpiece music video right here at YouTube.
