Instead of lining up athletes to pass on the Olympic torch from point A to point B, the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee have thoughtfully mounted a meaningful challenge in cyberspace that involves a journey of Olympic values instead: the Million Deeds Challenge.
Launched a couple of days back on Tues at the Jurong Regional Library, the challenge invites everyone to be virtual torchbearers of good deeds, and as the press release puts it, "join in the Youth Olympic movement and celebrate the spirit of Olympism through deeds of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.
"Small acts add up to big changes. The Million Deeds Challenge is not only about accomplishing something great or difficult. Instead, it is how simple, everyday acts of Excellence, Friendship and Respect can make a difference."
You can post a deed at the website www.singapore2010.sg/milliondeeds now. As of noon today, the number of good deeds submitted was 289. That makes it 999,711 more to go! We'll have fun.
Youth.SG got so inspired we decided to submit a good deed too. We've therefore topped the tally count to 290. Woots.
HOW TO POST A DEED
Step 1
Register as a torchbearer. It's easy!
Step 2
Check your email for YOGmail. Click on the link to verify your identity.
Step 3
Look for the Post a Deed tab at the top right of the site. Then actually post your deed. Don't forget to check on "Yes" to receive an alert when someone takes over the torch.
Step 4
Congrats! You've taken over the torch of someone cool (in our case, Terence from Greece). We can't wait to see who takes over the torch from our paws next.
