A couple of weeks back, I attended a Lolita party hosted by Black Alice, a local store specialising in Lolita fashion here.

Lolita fashion is a fashion subculture in Japan that is primarily influenced by Victorian and Rococo clothing. Key styles include Classic Lolita, which draws attention with a mature silhouette and sensible frills; and Sweet Lolita, which usually comes in pastel colours and whimsical with motifs of sweets, desserts, fairytales and cute animals. Then there is Gothic Lolita, a darker style that incorporates elements of gothic culture.

Lolita fashion is not limited to cosplay. In fact, like vintage retro or punk fashion, the lolita style is adaptable for everyday wear.

I was more than impressed at the party. I couldn’t take my eyes off the beautiful sight of ladies dressed in their desired style of Lolita. They maintained their individual styles, and reminded me very much of the dolls I dreamt of owning when I was still a little girl.

TEA PARTY FOR REAL-LIFE DOLLS

The next thing I knew, I was in the fitting room trying out lovely dresses handpicked by Jasmine and Teresa, two gorgeous Lolita fans.

LOLITA FASHION, HERE I COME!

It didn’t take me long to transform into a living doll. I tried all the different Lolita styles, and to my surprise I carried off the Sweet Lolita look best, which I dreaded to try on in the first place.

[CLOCKWISE, FROM TOP LEFT]: CLASSIC LOLITA, GOTHIC LOLITA AND SWEET LOLITA

Many people, like myself. think that Lolita isn’t a style that anyone can pull off.  I found out that I was wrong till I tried them out. It is painless to take the first move. You might even find yourself in love with the new person standing in front of the mirror. You might find the layers slightly warm for our humid climate, but I got so used to it very quickly.

SAME SAME, BUT DIFFERENT

If getting weird stares from the public is your main concern, think again. You probably already get the same kind of stare with your super mini skirt. Why not have fun while being stared at?

To get off to a fine start, my suggestion is to get a more toned down outfit and slowly adjust yourself accordingly. Treat it as a learning experience, and round up some of your friends up for peer support. Next, check out the Lolita stores in Singapore to further understand Lolita fashion more. Try out all the styles if you can. Even if you don't like it, you know you've tried something new.
