When Youth.SG received the confirmation for our round-table interview with Florence of Florence + the Machine, two things came to our minds: “What questions should we ask?” and “OMG?! What are you doing?! IT’S FLORENCE!!!!!”
This BRIT Awards nominee has a huge fan base in Singapore and an awesome voice to boot. You guessed it, it is her first time performing in Singapore.
The interview started with Florence talking about her album Lungs and sharing some alternative titles, such as For Kyle and F*** the cake I’ll have the ice cream and I think I just punched the waiter. Jokes aside, Lungs relates to the title track ‘Between Two Lungs’ and of course the spectacular reliance on these organs when she sings.
YOUTH.SG WRITER BERNARD WITH A GRINNING FLORENCE
Florence themes her songs around violence and destruction.
“I am attracted to the harder imagery and things that will spark things off in your imagination that isn’t [sic] that comfortable.”
FLORENCE EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL OF HER SOULFUL VOCALS
FLORENCE SINGING ABOUT WHAT SHE'S COMFORTABLE WITH
Florence prides her works on the unexpected effect that comes from taking on difficult subject matters in her songs. While her songs are based on personal experiences, the metaphors in them ensure the rest is left to the listener’s interpretation. She confesses that she is never good at emotional conversations; she is often at a loss of words with a million things to say, but never knows how to say it properly, especially to people that she loves. ‘Kiss with a Fist’, for example, alludes to an emotionally violent relationship.
Florence was here in Singapore to perform at the Esplanade with UK band The xx. In a separate phone interview with Youth.SG, Florence shared that The xx collaboration (they remixed her song ‘You Got Love’) came about while they were touring together and hanging out. Why? Florence “felt the love”.
Ending the session with us about her wish to collaborate with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, this vocal powerhouse hides her potential behind beautiful red hair, a floral shirt and denim blue shorts.
INTERACTING WITH HER LOVING FANS... NOW, THAT'S PASSION
Amazed I was when I caught her performance later that night! B.
