He entered the room with a “hello” which we all enthusiastically returned. While waiting for him to settle down, I could not help but be drawn to his ‘guyliner’. I’ll be honest here. While I am not a huge fan of his, I could not help but be just a little bit awestruck meeting Adam Lambert at Ritz Carlton Hotel last Friday.
In town last week for his first Southeast Asia fan event at the
Pantages Hollywood Theater, Universial Studios Singapore last Friday,
Adam also took the opportunity to meet his fans at an autograph session
in Bugis Junction the next day.
It is definitely good to be this American Idol runner-up right now. There’s travelling, interacting with a lot of different people and most definitely, the money.
“I worked really hard for the past 10 years to be comfortable. And that was another thing that fuelled my auditioning for Idol. Like I need to be a grown-up and I want to get a house someday and so I need to take this seriously,” said Adam.
READY TO MEET THE PRESS
Other perks of being an idol also includes getting great gifts or even naughty ones from fans.
“I got a sex toy,” he said with a laugh. “That was fun.”
But the lack of privacy “gets a little bit frustrating” and there have been incidents of his words being misconstrued or taken out of context by the press.
“I’m trying to learn how to watch what I say. I’m not good at it though,” he jokingly quipped. Having to watch what he says is definitely not easy for the 28-year-old who admitted that honesty is very important for him. That is part of the reason why he chose not to hide his sexuality (he is openly gay).
Above it all though, Adam wants people to know that he is a singer; everything else is secondary. And really, right now, it does not really matter to him that he did not win American Idol.
SMILE (OR POUT...) FOR THE CAMERA ADAM
“Essentially what American Idol did for me, and what I was hoping it will do for me, is give me exposure and opportunities. And it did that. I got signed to a record label. That was the biggest prize out of the whole thing,” Adam commented.
“If I had won, I would have made the same album. There might be a slightly different perception publicly with the title, maybe a slightly different expectation. But on my end and the management there is essentially no difference.”
And maybe in the future, fans can expect more diverse music from their idol. Adam mentioned that he would love to experiment with different genres such as hard rock, funk or even electronic music.
When asked which of his songs he would sing to a loved one, Adam chose his ballad ‘Broken Open’, which is one of the four songs he co-wrote for his debut album.
“I think that’s a really beautiful sentiment. I wrote that from personal experience. I think it is about that moment in an intimate relationship when the other person is allowed to be vulnerable. And that’s intimacy. It’s about intimacy. It’s about letting your true colours show. Letting all your cracks show, letting all the pieces that make who you are show,” he explained.
ADAM, ME AND THOMSON THE TOAD!
He is definitely enjoying his time in the limelight.
“This is my time for miracles. It is an amazing adventure I’m on. I’m lucky, not everybody gets this shot.” S
