ur site would have been great if it was done with a little more interactivity like animated. it's something out of the box. what program did u use to create those stylish images and icons?

just a quick comment, i think the reason why the judges probably didn't pick urs is because it's fully flash which means it will be extremely difficult to maintain with the rest of the website. i mean, imagine opening up a .fla and exporting the .swf file every time u want to update the site. i know using a .txt file to populate the data is possible as well but maybe they were not familar with that particular technique? nevertheless, good job!!

Actually, I couldn't agree with you more. But as a web designer, you can't always stay with the same thing. I know that it's fully in flash but there's a CMS system that can update the contents in full flash (.swf) file each time you edit the contents.

People likes to take the shortcut... i.e. portal, cms (plain-jane design), out-of-the-box shopping cart system.

That's why our design is unique... and if really selected, will spend that S$2,000 developing the site.

It's possible to have the full site in flash + portal now.. depends on how hardworking / lazy you are in developing the site.

Technically, all the designs submitted for the contest can be developed in Flash, maintained using a content management populating content data with xml, RDBMS etc. Not all things done in Flash such as animation, sound, object-oriented action scripting all under single platform can be replicated in other conventional technique. In fact if you are to compare an xhtml implementation over a properly developed flash implementation with the exact look and feel and functionality, a flash implementation can actually weigh smaller in file size overall and perhaps provides better user experience. Flash is definitely getting more powerful than when it first started.

However, I totally disagree that the other approaches beside using Flash are taking short-cuts. There are no such things as short cuts in the design industry. Its all about technical know-how and hardwork, basis being that it is a ‘right’ direction you are heading. The closest things to short cuts are hot-keys. And the worst shortcuts are customizing templates.

So who is more hardworking, someone who uses a visual authoring tool or someone who hardcodes away with the notepad? If one wish to be ‘hardworking’, why dun he or she just hardcode in notepad instead? Yeah this analogy is totally out of context. But it does reflect the need to be wise in our application of the common tools and technology we have available for our design use. There are no extremes. A web designer happily doing his or her layout using WYSIWYG tool will still have to go back to the codes to make fine tuning.

There is no fix formula, adhering to fundamentals and getting it spot on is the main key.
