Page 1 of 4 Ngee Ann City: a favourite shopping haunt for many Singaporeans. Chic ladies strut in precarious stilettos, while tourists fumble through heaps and heaps of apparel with unmistakable zeal. There is, however, an added reason that draws many young Singaporeans to Ngee Ann City. Tucking comfortably in an isolated spot is library@orchard, a perfect haven devoid of all the glitter and glamour of consumerism. Young adults and students walk pass aisles of books in silent contemplation. Let us not forget the many husbands and boyfriends seeking momentary relief in the library as their wives or girlfriends weave through endless rows of boutiques, loading up shopping bags and heavy parcels (a.k.a. hellish bills) with amazing speed. But all will be history in a matter of months. library@orchard announced that it will be "moving out from its current premises at Ngee Ann City on 30 November 2007", as its lease with the landlord will terminate soon. It will be relocated in *scape the youth community space in 2010. A new branch might make its mark on another site along Orchard Road as well. In order to consolidate views on how to revamp the new library so as to better suit the needs of the youth, the National Library Board has set up a blog and will soon be sending out surveys to the public. |
