Naomi Neo and Kylie Jenner's pregnancy announcement videos spark passionate discussion online.

Starting a family is usually the concern for married couples. However, in the recent months, young influencers like Naomi Neo and Kylie Jenner opened up on their pregnancies out of wedlock.

This has sparked discussion online on whether it is acceptable to be expecting a child before being lawfully wedded in this day and age.

What's going on?

Just last week, one of Singapore's top influencers, Naomi Neo, released a pregnancy announcement video on her YouTube channel. The 22-year-old said she was six months' pregnant.

Netizens started discussing if it was acceptable, after it was pointed out that Naomi has only been married for a month before her announcement.

Naomi's pregnancy announcement video has garnered over 560,000 views.

This is not the first time a young influencer has announced their pregnancy and created a ruckus online.

Earlier this year, American celebrity Kylie Jenner posted a video documenting her entire pregnancy journey, which she kept a secret until after the birth of her child.

The 20-year-old is unmarried but is raising the child with her boyfriend, Travis Scott.

The openness of these young influencers in talking about their pregnancy out of wedlock has ignited conversation online about how acceptable it is for couples to get pregnant before marriage.

Some youths think that couples should settle down in marriage before deciding to have a child.

23-year-old Nanyang Polytechnic student Desmond Ang said: "Marriage should happen because two people love each other, not because of an obligation. Couples should only start thinking of having children after they're married and living together, as dating and married life is different.

"They should also be financially stable and emotionally ready before welcoming a new life into the world."

On the other hand, some feel that pregnancy before marriage is not taboo anymore.

Nanyang Polytechnic student, Venessa Foong, 19, said: "It's 2018. It doesn't matter which comes first; the baby or the marriage.

"A marriage certificate is just a piece of paper at the end of the day and does not prove how well someone can take care of a child. As long as the couple have the means to care for their child and they are taking responsibility, why not?"

Some believe that marriage does not necessarily mean good parenting, as there can be loving unwedded parents or abusive married parents.
