BROADCAST: A celebration of Singapore's indie music

In the UK, there's Glastonbury. In the U.S, there's Cochella. Music fans will probably know what this alludes to. Here in Singapore, what's the last music festival you went to? For all who answer in jest - "Project Superstar", fret not. For now we have "BROADCAST", brought to you by Music For Good

In the UK, there's Glastonbury. In the U.S, there's Cochella. Music fans will probably know what this alludes to. Here in Singapore, what's the last music festival you went to? For all who answer in jest - "Project Superstar", fret not. For now we have "BROADCAST", brought to you by Music For Good.

"BROADCAST" is a lung-busting 13-hour local 'music-athon' at The Substation that will see over 24 local acts perform. Singapore's indie giants including Astreal, The Stoned Revivals, Concave Scream and Lilac Saints will be playing. Not only will there be 'live' acts, local DJ collectives Pop Tart and PopMyCherry! will be spinning. A visual feast of local short films and music videos will complete the festivities.

The festival is organized by Music For Good, a local music charity organization that reaches out to youth-at-risk. Held at The Substation, many a local scenester's hangout, "BROADCAST" aims to raise funds for Outreach Programs conducted by Music For Good. These programs use music (what else?) as a means of guidance and creative discourse to encourage youths and under-priviledged children.

GinetteAnother highlight would be a charity auction where you could win an all-expense paid dinner with either Lunarin's Linda Ong or Ginette Chittick of Astreal (Pictured right). Both Linda and Ginette are the front women and bassists of their respective bands. The auctions will take place after each band's respective sets. The dinner date is sponsored by Earshot Café by 1827 Thai Restaurant at The Arts House and will be on May 20, during another acoustic gig at the cafe. So all you fan-boys out there, what are you waiting for?

In addition, "BROADCAST" will see the release of 3 different CDs. The "For Good!" CD contains 14 previously unreleased tracks generously contributed by some of the bands performing and others like The Observatory, Electrico, Typewriter and many more. Astreal's "Fragments of the Same Dead Star" will see an exclusive limited launch the actual album will only be launched in June. Finally, there is "Humble Pie" - a compilation album produced by Beats Society that features the biggest hip-hop talents in Singapore.

So for all who still remember The Padres, hummed along to The Oddfellows and crave for those BigO days again, this festival ia where you would want to be. But far from just being just a trip back to nostalgia, "BROADCAST" is the biggest celebration of local music, yet.
