Why working during your teenage years could be the best experience of your life.
They say you grow up most from the ages 16 to 25.
Your hair gets longer, you learn more about yourself, and you start flirting with the opposite gender. Your experiences during these periods are the ones you'll look fondly back on in the long run.
As someone with friends who have been working since they ended secondary school, I really wish I had started working earlier.
Here are some reasons why working during your teenage years can be the best time of your life:
1. Earning your own keep
As a teenager, money can be quite an issue. Allowance might not be enough, and this is the time where you'd want to find ways to make an extra buck.
WHO DOESN'T WANT MORE MONEY TO SPEND?
Working a part-time job will not only allow you to earn that extra money, but also give you a sense of independence and pride, especially when you receive your first paycheck.
It's the first step to being completely self-reliant and a good way to kick start your savings account for the future.
2. Learning life's greatest lessons
Since starting work four years ago, I've tried five jobs, and I'll say they've taught me some things school could not.
Working has taught me how to write a resume, talk to customers and bosses, be confident in job interviews, handle work politics, and even know when to resign from a job that is squeezing me dry.
LEARNING TO WRITE A GOOD RESUME COMES WITH KNOWING WHAT INTERVIEWERS LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING.
Beyond that, working a part-time job can open your eyes to the real world and appreciate customer service staff all around you more.
3. Build up your street cred
Nowadays, employers and many educational institutes are looking for more than just the grades; a letter of recommendation from your part-time employer on the skills you have learnt can help you to impress lecturers at a new school, or even find a full-time job in the future.
A part-time job can also help you to learn new skills, such as how to use a Point Of Sale machine.
GETTING A PART-TIME DELIVERY JOB COULD HELP YOU TO LEARN THE FASTEST WAY AROUND TOWN.
Improving your knowledge of retail items is not only a good skill to have for your job, but an even better party trick a few years down the road. Imagine the look on your friend's face when you tell her the price of her bag, along with fun facts that you've learnt about it - like where it was produced.
4. Making new connections
A part-time job lets you meet all kinds of people from around the country that you've never met before, especially since most of our circle of friends is limited to schoolmates.
And because most part-time workers are students, you can easily connect with each other on common grounds such as schoolwork, and the stresses of being a teenager.
