Confessions of a compulsive liar

Opinions

Four honest truths from someone who can't help but lie.

I don't know why I do it so often, or why I even do it at all. But I just can't help it.

A few weeks ago, a colleague called me out for lying for no apparent reason. That's when I realised I may be a compulsive liar.

Sadly, it has come to the point where I have mastered the art of lying. I've managed to get away with things like getting out of social events and using my sister's stuff without her knowledge quite sneakily too.

Here are my honest (I swear they're honest) confessions as a compulsive liar.

Disclaimer: I only lie when I need to.

1. They're all white lies

I swear they are. And aren't white lies completely harmless…as long as you get away with it?

The main reason why I sometimes choose to lie (even when I can easily tell the truth) is because I know that it's harmless. And if my lies can help you in one way or another, why not?

I would never lie to the point where my life spirals into a real-life episode of How to Get Away with Murder, but I would definitely lie if it means I could get away with eating the last slice of pizza. #sorrynotsorry

NEVER HAVE I EVER FELT BAD ABOUT TAKING THE LAST PIECE OF FOOD.

2. The truth can sometimes be difficult and painful

I'm not encouraging anyone to lie about cheating on your partner or stealing from your parents, but I do live by these words: "Do what you want, i just don't hurt anyone".

I mean, would you really want to tell your parents how you spent your allowance? I don't think so.

3. I can't help it...

Actually, I can. But I just don't want to.

Lying does bring me some kind of joy and thrill, especially when I know that I have the upper hand with the truth. Plus, when you can get out of trouble and feel safer, why not?

For example, I would rather lie to my mother about where I went with my friends last night than to tell her the truth. C'mon, we've all been there right?

A friend recently told me that being a compulsive liar will start affecting all my relationships, but I still believe that if you're a good enough of a liar, you'll have nothing to worry about.

SOMETIMES, I DO WORRY ABOUT LOSING FRIENDSHIPS WHENEVER I LIE.

I never had the intention of hurting people in the process of lying, nor have I ever gotten entangled in my own web of lies. Maybe I have successfully mastered the art of lying after all these years? #lol

Rest assured, I'm working on this bad habit and I'm going to start telling the truth from now on…or maybe I'm just lying.
