A Wing Chun master's story

InterviewsYouth features

Fourth generation Yip Man disciple Daryl Yeo shared with us about what it takes to be a ‘Wing Chun Master’ in Singapore.

Ever since the film Ip Man was released in 2008, millions have flocked to learn the ways of the martial art, Wing Chun.

Daryl Yeo Feng Rong, 24, is no exception. Having caught onto the craze after witnessing the film, Daryl embarked on his Wing Chun training in 2008. Four years later, he became the first Wing Chun disciple in Singapore to receive his master's lineage—a feat few have achieved.

What is more, having received the lineage, Daryl has secured his status as a fourth generation disciple of Yip Man.

When asked what his role as a lineage holder entails, Daryl said: "I am able to teach in Singapore as a lineage holder of my sifu (master). Ultimately, the reputation and standard of my sifu's lineage is very important, so it is essential that I uphold them through my teachings."

The martial arts enthusiast has over 11 years of experience in various martial arts and is currently pursuing a Bachelor in Business (Marketing) at Singapore's Institute of Management (SIM).

A humble and down-to-earth chap, Daryl is like any other university student his age. He enjoys hanging out with his girlfriend, chilling with friends and occasionally hitting the gym during the holidays.

When he is not busy training at his master's academy on Tuesdays and Sundays, Daryl manages to find time to teach at the Daryl Yeo Wing Chun Teaching Centre in Hougang every Thursday and Saturday, and in Clementi every Monday.

When asked about how he copes with juggling school work and training, Daryl emphasised that time management is very crucial. "Sometimes, it gets to the point that I have to sacrifice training for project meetings and work. Personal time, relationship time and family time is also affected once in a while," said Daryl.

Given his dedication to Wing Chun, it comes as no surprise that the person he looks up to the most is Bruce Lee, who is a first generation disciple of Yip Man. Daryl describes his admiration for Bruce Lee's quest for wisdom and knowledge, dubbing him as a "genius living ahead of his time".

When asked if he had any advice for young martial enthusiasts who might be the ones looking up to him in the future, he said: "Seek and embrace your passion. Life will be more meaningful once you find it."

Even with his hectic schedule, Daryl's dream remains ever vivid and strong. He hopes to open a proper Wing Chun academy with state-of-the-art facilities in the near future, and hone it to international recognition.
