Rocking out with Hoobastank

ConcertsReviews

You might only know them for their hit song 'The Reason', but this band of 20 years has more to offer.

Hard rock band Hoobastank played a one-night only gig in Singapore on Nov 30. The four-piece band from Los Angeles has many other exceptional tracks that have been overshadowed by 'The Reason' and they showcased what their remarkable 20 year career has been about on Sunday night.

Before the concert, we attended a press conference with the band and got an insight into their career and recent album, Fight or Flight. When asked about becoming an independent band, they explained there was "no large philosophical meaning for the band" in leaving their previous record label.

They also mentioned that their recent work was different in a sense that it was more of a group effort with the whole band contributing to the album-making process. Douglas Robb, the lead vocalist, said the inspiration behind it mostly came from him being a parent while the rest of the band had a natural affinity for the music on the record.

The band looked calm and collected when they came on to the stage. The moment they opened with 'Just One', the atmosphere changed and the strong track got people jumping and head-banging. The band continued to gratify the audience with hit tracks like 'Running Away' and 'Inside of You'.

The band also gave us a taste of their recent album, Fight or Flight, playing 'No Destination', 'This Is Gonna Hurt' and 'No Win Situation'. Even though the album received lukewarm reviews, when the tracks were played live, the songs came across as more real and electrifying.

It was so easy to be immersed in their intense sound and Doug's superb vocals. The band was in their element on stage and performing seemed like second nature to them. Even though it was a small turn out, it was intimate and the interactions between Doug and the audience made the evening more enjoyable.

When the starting notes of 'The Reason' were heard, the audience went wild. Everyone raced forward, whipped out their hand phones and held it up high to record the special moment. The crowd joined in to sing the chorus in unity and it was moments like those that gave me chills. Even after ten years, the track is still a fan favourite and left the crowd roaring for more.

AND THE REASON IS YOU, DOUG!

Doug said that he had been asked countless times whether he was tired of playing the song and before he could continue, a die-hard fan had screamed "never!"-. It just warmed my heart. It is obvious that Hoobastank has had an impact on the music scene, even if it was just with one track.

A SPORTING AUDIENCE CLAPS ALONG TO THE BEAT

On a side note, the opening act, Wicked Aura, is a local band that packs a punch. I was impressed by their set. Their sound was an interesting mix of punk rock and Afro-Brazilian beats that was absolutely delightful. The band had a performance energy that was entertaining and almost equivalent to Bruno Mars and his band's theatrics. Plus powerhouse vocals, it was an amazing way to start the night. Check the band out and give them some love, they deserve it.
