Never Let You Go by Chevy Stevens is the latest book in the mystery/thriller genre and it has rightfully earned its place at the top.
The novel follows Lindsey, a wife who fights her way out of an abusive relationship with her husband. Using extreme methods, Lindsey manages to escape from her nightmare of a husband with her young daughter, Sophie, in tow.
Told from both Sophie and Lindsey's point of views, the story follows the pair as they recount their life with Andrew and their feelings as, after many years, Andrew is released from prison. While this is happening however, a series of startling events takes place that leaves everyone involved reeling.
Here are all the reasons why you need to read Never Let You Go:
It will teach you about abusive relationships
ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS IN MOVIES CAN OFTEN BE
INACCURATE OR NOT COMPREHENSIVE ENOUGH.
I've always said that reading helps you experience life from a different angle. Reading teaches you about things that you may otherwise never know much about.
In this book, Chevy Stevens takes us through all the intricacies of an abusive relationship. You get to see how the relationship starts and how slowly, little by little, Andrew starts to take control of Lindsey's life until he absolutely has her under his thumb.
As a reader, you know exactly what is going on, so when Andrew convinces his wife to leave her job, you know that he is actually trying to make sure that she makes no money herself. By saying that her food tastes bad, Andrew is putting her down and lowering her self-esteem so she feels even more indebted to him.
The type of abuse that Chevy Stevens writes about in this book is very complex and not at all clear-cut like you see in the movies.
In real life, an abusive relationship is all about the little things that eventually build up to that slap on the face or that shove into the wall. It's about verbal abuse, emotional abuse and control, and this novel very accurately portrays that.
It will keep you gripped from start to finish
I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT I COULD HARDLY EVER PUT THIS BOOK
DOWN TILL I WAS FINISHED. IT WAS JUST THAT ADDICTIVE.
As most mysteries go, this one was structured in a way that will keep you reading till the very end. Let's just say that I started reading and I pretty much didn't stop till it was over. And yes, I was doing this in the middle of my exams.
The story is told from alternative points of view, and skips from past to present so flawlessly that you will be forced to pay closer attention so that you don't miss anything.
Not to mention that the characters are totally relatable. You can completely understand why Sophie does everything that she does (even though some of her decisions admittedly are infuriating) and you can understand and feel the pain that Lindsey is going through.
It will make you so angry
I am a rather emotional reader and I tend to cry when characters in books die or if someone is very sick. However, I have never cried because I was so angry at a character's actions.
In this book though, I cried several times simply because I was so angry at Andrew and I was so afraid for Lindsey and Sophie.
The anxiety alone will practically kill you
I have read many thrillers but this was by far the most anxiety-inducing. It was fast-paced, highly suspenseful, and the build-up in the tension was just perfect enough to make you feel like you are trying to escape from an abusive husband in the middle of the night.
Totally better then any action movie I've seen, that's for sure.
It will creep you out
YOU IS A NOVEL ABOUT A MAN WHO STALKS A GIRL AND USES HER
DIGITAL TRAIL TO GET HER TO FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM.
Much like You by Caroline Kepnes, this novel will have you checking to make sure that your doors are locked and that your belongings are exactly where you left them when you went to work in the morning.
It really makes you do that double check on your life because you feel unsafe and that's not completely a bad thing. I think everyone needs to check their lives every now and then.
But regardless, as you read this book, you will find yourself checking over your shoulder. Horror movies have nothing on a good old thriller.
So if you're a fan of fast-paced thrillers that will creep you out, make you angry and basically completely mess with your head, this one is for you. Just make sure that you clear your schedule because I can assure you that once you start reading, you won't stop till it's over.
